On February 5 at Santa Monica's AMF Bay Shore Lanes, the Super Bowl-a-Thon XIV is being held to benefit the Westside Shelter and Hunger Coalition, an association of local human service, government agencies and faith-based organizations whose mission is to provide services for homeless and hungry people in the western part of LA County.

All of us at Lago were proud to participate in the Saban Free Clinic's Extravaganza for the Senses on Saturday, July 18 at 20th Century Fox Studios, which raised money for high-quality free medical care for the uninsured and working poor, and in Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation.  Check out this report and a photo of Lago's Vitello Tonnato at the latter fund-raiser to end childhood hunger.

I recently visited Lago for dinner with my husband and two young children ages 7 and 10 who've already cultivated a love of fine dining. Lago is, in fact, quite family friendly, and a favorite with the celebrity-set. "On Saturdays, one of four Santa Monica Certified Farmers Markets sets up shop just a few steps away from Lago’s front door, and the restaurant takes full advantage of the fresh produce sold there. The Burrata alla Caprese pairs the freshest farmers market tomatoes with creamy Burrata, a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. Farmers market produce is also worked into the artisanal cocktail menu, where refreshing libations are too tempting to resist. Try a market margarita, which includes market-fresh grapefruit, tangello and lime; or dive into the wildly popular caprese martini made from fresh cherry tomatoes, basil, crop tomato vodka and balsamic."

Noted food writer Barbara Hansen gave our 
STIMULUS LUNCH MENU a rave in Table Conversation, describing our Appetizer Buffet as
"… a meal in itself, [which] lets you choose anything you want… There were so many choices that I had to leave several behind.  My plate was already handsomely filled with grilled eggplant, marinated mushrooms, sliced sweet peppers, tomato slices with fresh mozzarella and basil, a frittata wedge, a tomato half stuffed with risotto and several slices of bresaola--dark red, air-dried salted beef accompanied by arugula and shaved Parmesan."
Of her STIMULUS LUNCH MENU experience, Hansen added,
"There was no skimping, no eliminating of extras.  The waiter brought a basket of good, warm bread, butter and a container of olive oil…  And we stayed for a long time, enjoying the pleasant, open space."

THE CRITICS ARE TALKING…


Restaurant critic Merrill Shindler visited Lago recently, announcing to his radio audience, "[The chef] really has a great sense of the food of Northern Italy.  I've had the best meal I've ever had there.  It was absolutely terrific.  They served an ossobuco that was so full of marrow and so covered with meat, it was just a joy."

Also dining with us was a writer from About.com, owned by the New York Times, who featured Lago as one of just seven L.A. dining spots in its list of "Favorite Restaurants and Old Standbys in Los Angeles."  Lago was described as being "as authentic Italian as you'll find this side of the ocean."
